Rug Care & Cleaning
An oriental rug is a lifetime investment. With proper care it will outlast the furniture around it and, in many cases, increase in value. The fundamentals are straightforward:
- Vacuum regularly — at least once a week using a rotating-brush vacuum to lift embedded dust without stressing the pile
- Professional cleaning — once or twice a year for a thorough wash that home methods cannot replicate
- Hand-woven rugs require gentle, professional care; avoid harsh machines or steam cleaners
- Machine-woven rugs tolerate careful home cleaning better, but professional cleaning is still preferred
- Antique and fragile rugs should always be entrusted to a specialist
Stain Removal
Act quickly — the sooner a spill is addressed, the better the outcome. Blot (never rub) the affected area, working from the edge inward.
- Wine: Blot immediately, then gently clean with a mixture of white vinegar and water
- Coffee: Blot excess, then treat with warm water and a small amount of mild soap
- Ink: Apply a small amount of milk to dilute, then follow with soap and water
For persistent stains or valuable rugs, contact us before attempting any home treatment — the wrong method can set a stain permanently.
Natural Fiber Rugs
Sisal, seagrass, and similar natural fiber rugs require a different approach. Use a high-suction vacuum without a beater bar, and address liquid spills immediately by blotting dry. For deeper cleaning, dry-cleaning powder systems work well. Rotate these rugs periodically to ensure even wear and sun exposure.
Restoration

- Color restoration using natural dyes matched to the original palette
- Patching and re-knotting of damaged areas
- Fringe repair and replacement
- Treatment for moth damage, water damage, and pet stains
